GPA to Percentage Converter

Enter a GPA on the 4.0 scale and see the percentage range it stands for on the standard conversion table — the common US convention, printed in full below so you can check every band yourself. A GPA that lands exactly on a band gets that band's range; one that falls between bands is interpolated and labelled as an estimate.

A 3.70 GPA is an A-

90–92%

The A- band on the standard table — a typical A- average is about 91%.

Why GPA is not just percentage ÷ 25

If GPA were a rescaled percentage, a 3.0 would be 75%. On the standard table it is a B — 83–86%. GPA is anchored to letter grades, and the letters are not evenly spaced in percentage terms: the F band alone covers everything below 65%, while each passing band is only 3–4 points wide. That is why honest conversion works band by band, the way the table does — and why two students with GPAs of 3.9 and 4.0 can have percentage averages several points apart, or nearly identical.

Going the other way? The percentage to GPA converter uses the same table in reverse. And if you need the GPA itself from a list of courses, that is the GPA calculator's job.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is a 3.7 GPA?+

A 3.7 is an A− on the standard conversion table, which covers 90–92% — so a 3.7 GPA stands for a percentage average in the low nineties, typically quoted as about 91%. The converter above shows the band for any GPA you enter.

What is a 3.5 GPA in percentage terms?+

A 3.5 falls between the B+ band (3.3 = 87–89%) and the A− band (3.7 = 90–92%), so there is no single official answer. Interpolating between the bands' midpoints gives roughly 89–90% — solidly a high-B / low-A average. Any converter that gives you one exact number for a 3.5 without explaining this is tidier than the truth.

What percentage is a 4.0 GPA?+

A 4.0 is the A band: 93–100%, with 96–97% as the typical midpoint people quote. Note the asymmetry built into the scale — the whole A band, a 7-point percentage range, compresses into the single value 4.0, which is one reason GPAs near the top hide real differences in percentage performance.

Why doesn't every school use the same GPA-to-percentage table?+

Because the table is a convention, not a law. The one printed here is the standard College Board-style 4.0 scale — the most widely used US reference — but individual schools set their own letter cutoffs: some place an A at 94, some have no A− at all, some run a straight 10-point scale. If your school publishes its own table, theirs is the one that governs your transcript.

Can I convert a weighted GPA to a percentage?+

Not meaningfully. Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0 because they include Honors and AP bonus points, which have no percentage equivalent — a weighted 4.4 is not '110%'. Convert the unweighted GPA instead; if you only know the weighted figure, first work out the unweighted one course by course with the unweighted GPA calculator.

Is a 2.0 GPA a 50% average?+

No — this is the most common conversion mistake. A 2.0 is a C, which on the standard table is 73–76%, not 50%. The GPA scale is not a percentage divided by 25: it is anchored to letter grades, and the F band alone swallows everything below 65%. The full table under the converter shows every band.
