Final Exam Calculator

One question, answered exactly: given your current grade and how much your final exam is worth, what score do you need on it? You get the number for your target — and, in the table underneath, what every letter grade would take.

Quick targets:(schools set their own cutoffs — edit the number if yours differ)

You need to score

94.7%

on your final exam to finish with 90.0% in the course.

Formula: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With a 0 the course grade is 61.6%; with a perfect final it is 91.6%.

To finish with…You need on the final
A (90%)94.7%
B (80%)61.3%
C (70%)28.0%
D (60%)Already locked in

The worked example behind the defaults

The calculator starts with a current grade of 88%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 90%. Your work so far locks in 88 × 0.70 = 61.6 points of the course grade. You need 90 − 61.6 = 28.4 more points, and the final can supply at most 30 — so the score you need is 28.4 ÷ 0.30 = 94.7%. Hard, but possible — and the table shows the flip side too: a B (80%) needs only 61.3%, and a D is already locked in before you sit down.

The full reasoning — including why a needed score can come out at 0 (already secured) or above 100 (out of reach) — is in our guide: what do I need on my final? And if your grade is built from syllabus categories rather than one current grade, the final grade calculator has a categories mode built for exactly that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?+

Use this formula: needed = (target − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight. Say you are on 88%, the final is worth 30% and you want 90%: (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 94.7% on the final. The calculator above runs it instantly and also shows what every other letter grade would take.

What is the difference between a final exam calculator and a final grade calculator?+

They run the same formula. This page is the focused version: one question, three numbers, plus a table of what each letter grade needs. The final grade calculator adds extra modes — working from syllabus categories, and a reverse mode for 'I already took it, what is my grade?' — for when your situation is less tidy.

Can my final exam actually hurt my grade?+

Yes, whenever the exam is worth enough. With a current grade of 88% and a final worth 30%, a 0 on the exam leaves you at 61.6% — the exam controls the last 30 points entirely. If your score lands below your current grade, the weighted course grade drops toward it. Sometimes the honest job of a final is defence, not attack.

What if the score I need is over 100%?+

Then that target grade is not reachable this term, and knowing that is useful rather than discouraging: a perfect final still gets you to the ceiling shown under the result. Aim at the highest reachable letter instead — the table under the calculator shows exactly what each one needs.

My final replaces my lowest test score. Does this still work?+

Mostly — first work out your current grade with the low test removed (your gradebook often shows this), because the replacement rule changes what 'current grade' means. Then use that figure here, with the final's normal weight. If your syllabus treats the replacement as extra on top of the final's own weight, the categories mode on the final grade calculator models it more precisely.

How much is a final exam usually worth?+

It varies by course and syllabus — anywhere from 10% to 40% of the course grade is common, and some courses make the final worth more than everything else combined. There is no standard to assume: the weight that matters is the one printed in your syllabus, which is why this calculator asks for it rather than guessing.
