Test Grade Calculator
Your teacher gives you points; your report card speaks percentages and letters. Enter the points you earned out of the points possible — or switch to questions mode — and get your percentage, your letter grade, and the GPA points it is worth, plus the score every other letter would have taken.

Letter boundaries follow the standard 4.0 scale printed on our methodology page — your teacher's cutoffs may differ at the edges, especially where partial credit or a curve applies.
Worked example
The calculator starts with 42 out of 50. The percentage is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. On the standard 4.0 scale — printed in full on the methodology page — 84% falls in the B band (83–86%), worth 3.0 grade points. The table under the calculator shows the near misses too: 44 points would have been a B+, and 47 an A.
One test is rarely the whole story, though. If this score feeds into a course grade alongside homework, quizzes and a final, the weighted grade calculator combines them by syllabus weights, and if the test is a final exam that has not happened yet, the final exam calculator tells you what score you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn points into a percentage grade?+
Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. Scoring 42 out of 50 gives 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. The letter grade then comes from the standard scale: 84% sits in the B band (83–86), worth 3.0 grade points. The calculator does the division and the lookup together.
How many questions can I miss and still get an A?+
An A starts at 93% on the standard scale, so on a 50-question test you need at least 47 right — you can miss 3. The table under the calculator works this out for your exact test length: it shows the points or questions each letter grade starts at, which is the fast way to set a target before the test rather than after it.
Is 84% a good test grade?+
On the standard scale 84% is a B — a solidly above-average result worth 3.0 grade points. Whether it is 'good' for you depends on what it feeds into: averaged with stronger work it barely dents an A course grade, while in a course where tests carry most of the weight it pulls hard. The weighted grade calculator shows exactly how one test score moves a course grade.
My test was graded out of a weird total, like 37 points. Does this still work?+
Yes — points-based grading works with any total because the percentage is just a ratio. 30 out of 37 is 81.1%, a B−. Odd totals are exactly where mental maths fails and a calculator earns its keep; the letter table also rounds its 'points needed' up, so a fractional threshold never understates what a letter takes.
What if my teacher grades on a curve?+
Then the raw percentage is not your final grade — your curved score is. If you know your curved percentage (or your teacher publishes the curve), enter that instead and the letter lookup applies as normal. If you do not know it, treat the result here as your uncurved standing: it is what the curve will be applied to.
How does one test change my course grade?+
By its weight. A test worth 20% of your course grade moves the course grade by a fifth of the gap between the test score and your other work. To see it concretely, put the test score into the weighted grade calculator alongside your other categories — or, if the test is still to come and it is a final, the final exam calculator shows what score a target grade requires.
