Weighted Grade Calculator

Most course grades are not a simple average — homework might count 20%, tests 40%, the final 15%. Enter your syllabus categories with their weights and your scores, and get the weighted grade they actually produce. If your weights do not total 100, the result is normalised and the calculator says so plainly.

Copy each category from your syllabus with its weight and your score in it. Every category needs a score here — if one is still to come, leave it out entirely and add it later.

Your weighted course grade

86.7% (B)

Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σweights = based on 100% of category weight · worth 3.0 grade points

Worked example

The pre-filled categories: Homework 95% (weight 20), Quizzes 88% (15), Tests 82% (40), Participation 100% (10) and a Final exam of 78% (15). Multiply out: 1900 + 1320 + 3280 + 1000 + 1170 = 8670. The weights total 100, so the course grade is 8670 ÷ 100 = 86.7% — a B. Notice what did the damage and what did not: the weak test average sits in the heaviest category, so it outweighs the perfect participation score four to one.

Mid-semester, with categories still to come? The semester grade calculator is built for that: it reports your standing on the work done so far and the points already banked. And once the course grade is final, it becomes one line in your GPA.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?+

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add those products up, and divide by the total weight. Homework 95 at 20%, quizzes 88 at 15%, tests 82 at 40%, participation 100 at 10% and a final of 78 at 15% gives (1900 + 1320 + 3280 + 1000 + 1170) ÷ 100 = 86.7% — a B. The calculator above runs exactly this example.

What happens if my weights don't add up to 100?+

The calculator normalises: it divides by the weights you actually entered instead of 100, so each category keeps its correct proportion of the grade. Scores of 90, 80 and 70 at weights of 30, 30 and 20 give 6500 ÷ 80 = 81.25%, not the misleading 65% you would get by dividing by 100. A note appears whenever this happens — and if a category is simply missing, add it, because normalising is a fallback, not a fix for missing data.

What is the difference between a weighted grade and a weighted GPA?+

Different 'weighted', different job. A weighted grade combines the categories inside one course (homework, tests, final) by their syllabus weights. A weighted GPA is a school-level average across courses that adds bonus points for Honors and AP classes. This page does the course-grade version; the weighted GPA calculator does the other one.

A category has not happened yet. How do I handle it?+

Leave it out entirely — delete the row or clear its score — and the calculator works out your grade from the categories that count so far, normalising their weights. Just remember the result is a standing, not a final grade: the missing category will still move it. If the missing piece is the final exam and you want to know what it has to be, that is the final exam calculator's question.

Why is my weighted grade lower than my average score?+

Because weights pull the result toward the heavy categories. If tests are 40% of your grade and your test average is your weakest score, the weighted grade lands below your simple average — by design. The fix is in the same place: the category with the biggest weight is where improvement pays most, point for point.

Do teachers always weight categories the way the syllabus says?+

The syllabus is the contract, and most teachers follow it — but details like dropped lowest scores, extra credit, and rounding happen inside categories before the weights apply. Enter your category scores as your gradebook shows them (post-drop, post-curve) and the weighting here will match. Where your gradebook's category score differs from your own average of its assignments, trust the gradebook figure.
