Percentage to GPA Converter
Enter a percentage and get its letter grade and GPA points on the standard 4.0 conversion table — the common US convention, printed in full underneath so the answer is never a black box. The default example: 88% is a B+, worth 3.3 points.
88.0% converts to
B+ = 3.3 GPA
The B+ band runs from 87% to 89% on the standard table below.
| Letter grade | Percentage | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 93–100 | 4.0 |
| A- | 90–92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 |
| B- | 80–82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76 | 2.0 |
| C- | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| D | 65–66 | 1.0 |
| F | below 65 | 0.0 |
How the conversion works
There is no division involved. Your percentage is looked up in a band table: each letter grade owns a percentage range and a points value. B+ owns 87–89% and 3.3 points, so any percentage in that range converts to 3.3. The bands are uneven by design — the passing bands are 3–4 points wide, while F takes everything below 65% — which is why converting a GPA back to a percentage gives a range, not a single number, on the GPA to percentage converter.
Converting one score is only step one. A semester's GPA is the points of every course, weighted by credits — work yours out on the GPA calculator, and read the full scale with its sources on the methodology page.
Frequently asked questions
What GPA is 88%?+
On the standard conversion table, 88% is a B+, worth 3.3 GPA points — the B+ band runs from 87% to 89%. Enter it above and the converter highlights the band in the table so you can see the neighbouring letters too.
What GPA is a 91 percent?+
91% is an A−, worth 3.7 grade points — the A− band covers 90–92%. One percentage point either way changes the answer: 89% is a B+ (3.3) and 93% is an A (4.0), which is why boundary scores matter so much in percentage-graded courses.
What percentage do I need for a 4.0 GPA?+
On the standard table, the A band starts at 93% — so every course averaged at 93% or above holds a 4.0. But remember GPA is averaged from letter grades course by course, not converted from one big percentage: a single course at 88% (3.3) pulls a semester of A's below 4.0 no matter how high the others are.
Is 72% a C or a D?+
On the standard table, 72% is a C−, worth 1.7 points — the C− band covers 70–72%. A D+ starts at 67%. Schools with different cutoffs can place 72% differently, but under the common US convention used here it is the top of the C− band, one point short of a plain C.
How do I convert my whole semester's percentages into a GPA?+
Convert each course's percentage to its letter and points first (this page), then average the points weighted by credits — that second step is the GPA calculator's job, and it matters: a 4-credit course at 3.0 moves your GPA more than a 1-credit course at 4.0 lifts it. Converting your overall percentage average in one step gives a different, less accurate number.
My school uses a different scale. Can I still use this?+
As a reference, yes; as your transcript's truth, no. This converter uses the standard College Board-style 4.0 table, the most common US convention. If your school publishes its own cutoffs — some set an A at 94, some use no plus/minus grades — compute with their table. The differences show up at band edges, which is exactly where it matters.
