Latin Honors Calculator
Cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude — the three Latin honors bands printed on US diplomas. Enter your cumulative GPA and see which band it falls in on the typical thresholds, with the honest caveat that your own college sets the real cutoffs.
A 3.72 GPA falls in the…
Magna cum laude
band (3.7–3.89 on the typical thresholds). With great praise — a distinction band just below summa. Your own college sets its real cutoffs — check its honors policy before you count on the cord.
The three bands, side by side
| Honors | Typical GPA range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Summa cum laude | 3.9 – 4.00 | With highest praise — the top band, often the top few percent of a class. |
| Magna cum laude | 3.7 – 3.89 | With great praise — a distinction band just below summa. |
| Cum laude | 3.5 – 3.69 | With praise — the first Latin honors band at most colleges. |
| No Latin honors | Below 3.5 | A solid record that misses the first band — the gap is often a few tenths, and earlier semesters decide how reachable it still is. |
Short of a band you want? The raise my GPA calculator shows the average you would need to earn from here to reach 3.5, 3.7 or 3.9 — and how many semesters the climb takes. For what the numbers mean beyond honours, see what is a good GPA.
Frequently asked questions
What GPA do you need for cum laude?+
On the typical US thresholds, cum laude starts at a 3.5 cumulative GPA, magna cum laude at 3.7, and summa cum laude at 3.9. Those are conventions, not law — plenty of colleges set their own lines (3.6/3.8/3.95 is a common variant, and some use class-rank percentages instead of GPA cutoffs), so treat this page as the map and your college's honours policy as the territory.
What does summa cum laude mean?+
Latin for 'with highest praise'. It is the top Latin honors band, typically a GPA of 3.9 or higher — at many colleges it goes to only the top few percent of a graduating class. Below it sit magna cum laude ('with great praise', typically 3.7–3.89) and cum laude ('with praise', typically 3.5–3.69).
Is a 3.7 GPA magna cum laude?+
On the typical thresholds, yes — 3.7 is exactly where the magna cum laude band starts. A 3.7 is also an A− average on the 4.0 scale, which gives a feel for the band: a record of mostly A− and A grades, with very little below. If your college uses the 3.8 variant for magna, a 3.7 lands in cum laude instead — the difference is your school's table, not your record.
Do Latin honors use weighted or unweighted GPA?+
The GPA your college itself computes — which for college students is simply their cumulative GPA on the college's own scale; weighted high-school scales do not apply. High schools that award Latin honors usually name their basis (often the weighted GPA) in the student handbook. Either way, the figure that matters is the one printed on your official record.
What is the difference between Latin honors and the dean's list?+
Time span. The dean's list is a per-semester award, usually for a semester GPA of 3.5+ in that term. Latin honors are a graduation distinction computed from your entire cumulative record. A student can make the dean's list several times and still miss cum laude — or never make a single dean's list and graduate with it, if the early semesters were strong. Plan for the cumulative number; it is the one printed on the diploma.
Can I still reach Latin honors from a 3.3?+
It depends how many credits stand behind the 3.3. From 30 credits, two perfect 15-credit semesters take you to (99 + 120) ÷ 60 = 3.65 — cum laude territory. From 90 credits the same two perfect semesters reach only (297 + 120) ÷ 120 = 3.48, a hair short. The raise my GPA calculator runs your real numbers and shows the highest band still reachable.
