Letter Grade to GPA

Pick a letter grade and see exactly what it is worth: its points on the 4.0 scale and the percentage band behind it. The full chart is printed below — all thirteen letter grades, A+ to F.

A B+ is worth…

3.3 GPA points

On the standard scale a B+ is a percentage of 87% up to the next band. In a 3-credit course it banks 9.9 quality points toward your GPA.

Every letter grade and its GPA points

Letter gradeGPA pointsPercentage
A+4.097–100
A4.093–96
A-3.790–92
B+3.387–89
B3.083–86
B-2.780–82
C+2.377–79
C2.073–76
C-1.770–72
D+1.367–69
D1.063–66
D-0.760–62
F0.0Below 60

Percentage bands are the common US convention used across this site: A+ 97–100, A 93–96, A− 90–92, then three-point bands down to D− 60–62, with F below 60. Your school may set its own cutoffs — if it publishes them, its table wins.

Frequently asked questions

What is a B+ in GPA points?+

A B+ is worth 3.3 points on the standard 4.0 scale, and it stands for a percentage of 87–89%. In a 3-credit course a B+ banks 9.9 quality points — 1.2 points behind the 11.1 an A− would bank in the same course, which is why the +/− steps matter at GPA boundaries.

What GPA is an A−?+

An A− is worth 3.7 points, for a percentage of 90–92%. It is the most consequential step on the scale for strong students: a semester of A− grades gives a 3.7 GPA, which sits in magna cum laude territory at many colleges, while straight A's give the full 4.0.

Is a C− worth 1.7 or 2.0?+

1.7. The plain C is the 2.0 band (73–76%); C− is the step below it at 1.7 points (70–72%). The distinction matters because 2.0 is the good-standing line at most colleges — a record of C− grades averages below it, even though every course was technically passed.

What is the GPA for a D+?+

A D+ is worth 1.3 points, for a percentage of 67–69%. It is a passing grade at most schools, but barely: a semester of D+ grades produces a 1.3 GPA, below the 2.0 line for good standing, probation and most transfer applications.

Does an A+ count as 4.0 or 4.3?+

On the standard 4.0 scale, 4.0 — an A+ and an A earn the same points, which is why a student with A+ grades can still have exactly a 4.0. Some schools run a 4.33 scale where the A+ alone counts 4.33. If your transcript shows a GPA above 4.0 without weighted courses, that second scale (or a weighted one) is probably what your school uses.

How much is one letter grade worth to my GPA?+

One step — say B to B+ — is 0.3 points in that course. Spread over a semester it moves your GPA by 0.3 × (course credits ÷ total credits): in a 3-credit course inside a 15-credit semester, one step is worth 0.06 GPA points. Small per course, decisive across a transcript — five one-step improvements in a year is roughly a third of a GPA point.
