Semester GPA Calculator

One term, on its own. Add the courses you are taking this semester — grades and credits — and get this semester's GPA as you type. Nothing from earlier terms is blended in; that is the cumulative calculator's job, linked below.

Worked example — one semester, start to finish

The calculator starts with this term: English A− (3 credits), Biology B+ (4 credits), History A (3 credits), Math B (3 credits). Points on the 4.0 scale: 3.7, 3.3, 4.0, 3.0. Weighted by credits: 11.1 + 13.2 + 12.0 + 9.0 = 45.3 quality points over 13 credits — a semester GPA of 3.48. Notice Biology: it is not the worst grade, but at 4 credits it pulls harder than the 3-credit courses. The heaviest course with the lowest grade is always the biggest lever on a semester GPA.

Then what? Your cumulative GPA

Frequently asked questions

What is a semester GPA?+

It is the GPA for one term only: every course you took that semester, converted to grade points, multiplied by their credits, divided by the term's total credits. It ignores every other semester — that wider number is your cumulative GPA. A semester with English A− (3 credits), Biology B+ (4), History A (3) and Math B (3) works out to 45.3 quality points over 13 credits, a 3.48 semester GPA.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?+

Scope. Semester GPA describes one term; cumulative GPA blends every term you have completed, weighted by credits. Deans' lists, semester honours and academic-probation checks usually look at the semester number, while graduation, transfers and employers look at the cumulative one. The two can tell very different stories — a 3.48 semester sitting on a 3.4 record over 45 earlier credits only lifts the cumulative figure to 3.42.

How do I calculate my semester GPA by hand?+

Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, +/− steps in between). Multiply each course's points by its credits. Add those products — they are your quality points — and divide by the total credits. That is all there is: the calculator above simply does it as you type, and the methodology page prints the full scale.

Do failed or repeated courses count in a semester GPA?+

A failed course counts: an F earns 0.0 points but its credits still go in the denominator, which is why one F hurts so much. Repeated courses depend on your school — some replace the first grade, some count both attempts. If your school replaces, leave the earlier attempt out of this semester's list; if it counts both, enter both.

What semester GPA do I need for the dean's list?+

Most colleges set the dean's list at a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher, often with a minimum credit load (commonly 12 credits) and no grade below a C — but the exact bar is your school's, printed in its catalogue. Run your expected grades through the calculator with a target in mind: if the term comes out at 3.5+, you are on the list at most schools.

Does a pass/fail course affect my semester GPA?+

Normally no: a Pass earns the credits but no grade points, so it sits outside the GPA entirely — neither helping nor hurting. A Fail under a pass/fail option is the exception at many schools, where it can count as an F. Check your school's rule before you elect pass/fail on a course you might do badly in.
